A critical challenge for the up and coming filmmaker is to successfully navigate a complex world of copyrights. In an age where virtually any piece of media, be it moving image, photo, or song can be found online the temptation to recklessly appropriate for ones own use is very strong. At the same time, the desire to share and collaborate powered by the internet is also very strong.

A landmark organization called the Creative Commons provides a fundamental tool for the emerging filmmakers of the 21st century to leapfrog the traditional copyright quagmires.  According to their website:

Our tools give everyone from individual creators to large companies and institutions a simple, standardized way to grant copyright permissions to their creative work. The Creative Commons licenses enable people to easily change their copyright terms from the default of “all rights reserved” to “some rights reserved.”

The Creative Commons allows for remixing and sampling work. No more ripping off music – there are hundreds of thousands of songs that can be used legally!
